~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o Toys What you can do to help: 3. Volunteer to work at the store. We’d like to have people able to open the store on a weekday, too! Post Office Food Drive – 2009 PPC’s Food Closet is a food distribution center and is the recipient of the annual USPO Food Drive from the Paoli area. On Saturday, May 9th, the trucks began arriving at 10:45 a.m. All day, until after 4:00 p.m., they came. Some drivers were new; some we see every year; one couple came each with their own truck; there were personal cars and trucks; many drivers were very invested in the project; one driver asked to see what we do with all the food—and was given a tour; some expressed great satisfaction that this year’s collection was so much larger than last year’s. PPC volunteers started early to set up tables and arrange labeled crates for the food to come. Once the deliveries began to arrive, volunteers unpacked bags, checked all expiration dates, and sorted. Some worked all 9-10 hours; some worked 4-5 hours, some worked in1 or 2 hour shifts—whatever time they could devote to this unique challenge. Some never saw the light of day, as their job was stocking the shelves in the food closet. Some should have special mention for pushing heavy carts. Forrester Hall was a beehive of activity all day. By 6 p.m., over 25 tables had been put away and the canned goods had all been sorted and put away in the food closet. An entire car trunk load of plastic bags and another trunk full of paper bags were taken to be recycled. Folks went home very tired and very glad about another very successful food drive. After nine days of rain, even the sun smiled on us. PPC’s food closet now is well-stocked to provide food for those in need (for a while!) The quote of the day goes to a hardworking elementary school age helper. When his ‘shift’ had been completed, his grandfather offered to take him for ice cream on the way home as a treat for all his hard work, but the young worker said he’d rather stay and help for a little while longer. Now there’s someone who understands that his ministry matters! Thanks to the entire Post Office Food Drive Ministry Team: Men, Women, Youth, and Children. (Mark your calendars now! The 2010 USPO Food Drive is May 8, 2010!) Bridge of Hope Provides mentoring services to enable a homeless family to achieve self-sufficiency. A team of PPC disciples has been trained to mentor a client in this program; they are awaiting a referral. http://www.bridgeofhopelcc.org/ Cornerstone Christian Academy is a school in Philadelphia for children who live in neighborhoods which are not safe.
